Early Life and Education

Hal Clement was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, and had a strong interest in STEM fields from a young age.

    • He graduated from Rindge Technical College in 1939 and later obtained a bachelor's degree in astronomy from Harvard University in 1943. Clement continued his education, earning a master's degree in education from Boston University (1946) and a master's degree in chemistry from Simmons College (1963).

    Military Service

    Upon graduating from Harvard, Clement enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a B-24 bomber pilot during World War II.

    He completed 35 combat missions. After the war, he transferred to the Air Force Reserve, where he attained the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1976.
