From the moment he takes the stage with a barrow-load of props and a series of quick-fire silly gags, “Squeaky” Smee has the audience right there in the palm of his hand.

Young and old are caught up in Joe’s World, a world where silliness reigns supreme – and that’s exactly what Joe does, yet again – reign supreme.

This is his 21st pantomime – and his third in Birmingham in five years.

Yet he treats it – and us – like it’s his first. Quite clearly he’s enjoying it as much as the audience enjoy him, and long may he continue to do so.

Sadly, though, without him this pantomime would, I fear, be a rather tame affair.

Granted it has every ingredient you expect and need in a panto – it’s colourful, pacey, well-choreographed, with some fine sets, and is generally well acted, but if pushed I would find it hard to proclaim it to be one of the best I’ve seen
